Protein powder – types, nutrition and use

Protein powder is a convenient food when you need to supplement your diet. Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass, but powder is unnecessary if food already meets your needs.

Whey, casein or plant protein?

Whey and casein come from milk. Casein often has a thicker texture and is digested more slowly. Whey isolate usually contains more protein and less lactose than concentrate, but is not automatically lactose-free.

Soy, pea and plant-protein blends can suit vegan diets. Check ingredients and allergen labels on plant-based products too. People with milk protein allergy should avoid whey and casein, including lactose-free versions.

How much do I need?

Around 1.2–2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily is a common guideline for healthy adults who train regularly. Needs depend on training, energy intake and individual circumstances. Include protein from all food and drinks.

Grams of powder are not grams of protein. Read the nutrition label and compare both per 100 grams and per serving. Spread protein across meals; there is no universal requirement to drink a shake immediately after training.

Other products and practical choices

Gainers provide more energy and carbohydrate. Collagen has a different amino acid profile and does not directly replace complete protein sources. Mix according to the product's instructions; milk changes energy, protein and allergen content compared with water.

Should I use protein powder on rest days?

Only if it helps meet that day's needs. Adjust the amount to your food intake, not automatically to the number of workouts. Medical conditions or special dietary needs require individual assessment.
