Martial arts belts – colour, length and care
Choose the belt colour awarded by your club. Colour sequences and intermediate grades vary between styles, federations and age groups.
Which belt do I need?
Standard budo belts are used in karate, judo and jujutsu, among other arts. BJJ belts normally have a dedicated rank panel. Taekwondo uses gup and dan grades and, in some systems, poom grades for younger practitioners. Kyu usually describes grades before dan in Japanese martial arts.
How do I choose the length?
Measure a belt that already fits, or follow the product's size guide, allowing for wearing it over your uniform. Numbered sizes are not universal and should not be converted into centimetres using a generic chart.
The belt should tie securely with roughly equal ends that do not interfere with training. Many designs wrap twice around the body; follow your club's tying method.
Material, embroidery and washing
A softer belt may be easier for children to tie. Heavier models can hold their shape but feel stiffer. Check embroidery options and competition rules before ordering. Follow the care label, dry the belt after training and avoid leaving it damp in your bag.
Are there competition requirements?
Yes. IBJJF, for example, specifies a width of 4–5 cm and ends approximately 20–30 cm long after tying a double knot. This is a BJJ example, not a rule for every martial art. Always check the current event rules.
